Disease Surveillance, Animal Welfare, and Pet Owner Education with Maurice Frank, Trinidad and Tobago

‘Can it be a deep freezer?’

Maurice attended the University of West Indies to become a vet and now works in disease surveillance in Trinidad. He explains the socioeconomic situation that leads to animal poaching from Venezuela and the concerns about the welfare of the animals that are brought across to Trinidad.

Maurice discusses several common conditions in these animals and how education plays a part in fuelling the traffic of non-native species to his country. Later in the episode, he talks about mental health in the veterinary profession and the financial limitations of both the professional and the veterinary client.

As usual, the episode ends with some light-hearted questions and with a talk about life in Trinidad.
